Photography Workshops Autumn 2016

Have you wanted to improve your photography skills, learn how to use that new DSLR you were given, or just make better use of your iPhone camera? These workshops offer the perfect opportunity to gain confidence, learn a few tips and have fun together. There are two different workshops, both running on both dates, one after the other, so you can choose the one to suit you or stay on to do both!

WORKSHOP 1: EVERYDAY AWESOME PICTURES
11am – 1pm

Hannah Beatrice Photography Workshop

This short course is ideal for everyone who wants to take better personal pictures with their phone or compact camera on auto. Learn and practise a few simple principles about light and composition that will help you photograph the everyday with a bit of extra awesomeness, from your toddler racing across the floor, your travels, your culinary skills or your garden.

We will first spend some time thinking about all the reasons we photograph before heading out around Castlefield canals to practise with some challenges.

During the workshop, we will cover:

  • The soul of photography
  • Leading the eye around your image
  • Choosing the best light
  • Photographing people at their best
  • Indoor lighting and restrictions

Bring a photograph you love for the group to look at. This could be one that you’ve taken or maybe a famous one you admire; it can be printed, or on your phone. Bring something, anything, to take photos with (fully charged)!

WORKSHOP 2: GET TO KNOW YOUR DSLR
1.30pm – 3.30pm

Got a Digital SLR that you’ve never taken off auto? If you’re anything like me, you’ll find instruction booklets difficult to get stuck into. That’s why this is a hands-on practical introduction to aperture, shutter speed, focussing and white balance to give you more control over your camera controls so you can really unleash your creativity.

We will first spend some time first at all the knobs and dials on our cameras before heading out around the canals to practise with some challenges I will set you.

During the workshop, we will cover:

  • What the common knobs and dials do
  • Nailing a great exposure in manual mode
  • Beautiful portraits / shallow depth of field
  • Fast moving subjects with shutter speed
  • Handle low light conditions with ISO

Bring a fully charged Digital SLR or camera with manual mode.

FAQs

Where do we meet?

For both workshops, we will be meeting at the cafe at the Museum of Science and Industry in Castlefield, Manchester.

What should I bring to Workshop 1: Everyday Awesome Photos?

• A PHOTOGRAPH: Bring a photograph you love for the group to look at. This could be one that you’ve taken or maybe a famous one you admire. It can be printed, or on your phone.

• A FULLY CHARGED CAMERA: This course is suitable for any camera, including phone cameras – just make sure it is fully charged and you have plenty of space on a memory card.

• OUTDOOR WEAR: If the weather looks bad, bring suitable clothing/footwear as we will be outside, though there are areas to shelter under during light showers.

What should I bring to Workshop 2: Get to Know Your DSLR?

• A FULLY CHARGED DSLR CAMERA: This course is suitable for any DSLR camera or camera with manual mode – just make sure it is fully charged and you have plenty of space on a memory card.

• OUTDOOR WEAR: If the weather looks bad, bring suitable clothing/footwear as we will be outside, though there are areas to shelter under during light showers.

Will you be able to teach me specific controls on my camera?

We won’t be covering specific features of your individual camera, as camera models vary enormously. For the first workshop (Everyday Awesome Photos), it helps if you are comfortable using your camera in Auto. For the second workshop (Get to Know Your DSLR), I will be focussing on what the main exposure controls do, not where they are. I can usually find the Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO controls on Nikon and Canon models. If you’re stuck beyond this I will try to help where I can, but you may need to refer to your instruction booklet.

If I book onto both courses, will there be time for some lunch?

Yes, there will be a short break between 1pm–1.30pm where we will return to MOSI. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch or buy something from their café. Don’t forget there is a £5 discount to buy the joint ticket of both workshops together!

How many people will be on the workshop?

Places are limited to a maximum of 10 on each workshop, so that I can be sure to get round to help everybody.

COST
£15
each workshop or £25 for both
